Review on Guardians of the Galaxy

***WARNING***  CONTAINS SPOILERS

Guardians of the Galaxy was an action-packed, comical movie that discusses Peter Quill's quest through space to keep the orb out of evil, power-hungry Ronan's reach. The witty tale brings a new meaning to space adventure. It begins with the death of the Peter’s mother — a sad start to a rather amusing movie. Peter, who later fashions himself with the title “Star Lord,” is then taken from his home. Fast forward a couple years and Peter Quill is a grown man — given the mission to secure the orb.
After discovering the true power of the odd object, and determined to keep it out of Ronan’s hands, Peter sets out on a vigorous quest with the aid of four others: Gamora, a dangerous traitor who isn’t quite the creature she appears to be, Rocket — a small but fierce raccoon with a lot to say, Groot, a tree with strange human qualities — and in my opinion one of the most likable characters in the movie — and finally Drax the Destroyer, a man who speaks in metaphor who is frighteningly strong and seeks revenge on Ronan for killing his family.
The film was given a startling 92% on Rotten Tomatoes – something that is unheard of for most movies. Although I liked this movie, I personally would award it a 7.8 out of 10. It had many great moments, but there were some holes in the plot. For example, in the beginning when Peter is taken out of his home, the movie doesn’t describe whether or not he ever thought of his family back home (besides his mother). They do mention that Yondu — a man who only has to whistle to slice off ten heads — takes him in. However, whether or not he seeks to return to his family is uncertain. Hopefully in the sequel this will be cleared up.
My favorite parts were the small, witty moments, like when Peter’s "finger was stuck" — (childish joke, I know, but amusing all the same). I also thought the ending was well done. The orb is stated to be an object that only an incredibly powerful person can hold. In end of the movie, in desperate attempts to keep the orb out of Ronan’s hands and protect innocent citizens, Peter holds the orb, nearly killing himself doing it. Before he dies, however, Gamora takes his hand, and the orbs power begins to destroy her as well. Then Drax takes Gamora’s hand, then Rocket (I don’t remember the order clearly.) The four of them combined are able to contain the stone and save the day. This moment had a beautiful nature about it and really summed up the moral of the power of friendship for me.
All in all, Guardians of the Galaxy is a great movie, despite a few flaws. I would most definitely recommend it to anyone looking to watch something good. It’s a great film to watch with friends — trust me, it’ll get you laughing. So head to the theaters, grab some popcorn and enjoy.
