The New Girl in Town

Starting out at a new school where you don't know anyone sucks. Tons. You start out will the whole "what's your name/ where you from" conversation and then repeat the same five second convo six times because you either don't know what to talk about or you honestly just forget. Then there's that awkward stage with people when you've acknowledged that you know each other, but you're not quite yet friends. And once you consider yourselves "friends" you might be chill but not close enough to feel comfortable around them. You still feel required to impress the people around you, but at the same time everyone tells you to "be yourself" like that's some kind of gateway to friendship.

Let me tell you something -- I am probably the worse person to give advice to when it comes to being a new kid -- but there's no handbook to making friends. You need time. If you're the type of girl/guy that can make a whole clique the first day of school, good for you. The rest of us still need to go through the stages listed above. But to all those others who are suffering in an uncomfortable social environment and think you're never going to make friends that you like, think again. You will make friends. But remember this along the process -- there are no boundaries to who you make friends with. Just because someone appears cooler/not as cool as you doesn't mean that you can't make friends with them. Friendship has nothing to do with status. So please, please, please don't feel required to make friends with people just like you. I know this sounds so lame, but people actually do it. They make friends with the people that look like them, or dress like them, or talk similarly to them. It's not a bad thing but there's a world outside your own and if you keep making friends with the same people you might end up missing out on really amazing folk.

Ew. I just said folk.
But that's not the point.

The point is that the new girl/guy in town is fierce and you better watch out because they'll be ruling this place like a sweet pan of cake.

Signed,
The Gossamer
